From June 11-17, NOA held our first Native Community Organizers national training for 2023 in Federal Way, Washington. This national training was one of the largest yet with 27 participants from 12 different states, 27 tribes, and 27 organizations. Throughout the training, participants engaged in a range of activities focused on coalition-building, power-mapping, communication strategies, along with other knowledge-sharing activities grounded in cultural values. Attendees worked closely with each other on solving problems, engaging in open discussions, and reflecting on key takeaways.

One of the participants who attended the training, June Shorthair (Phoenix Indian Center), said, “I recently attended the 2023 Native Organizers Alliance national Native community organizing training, and it was a fantastic experience! The training was centered on Native issues and strategies that our organizations are currently working on. We emphasized our Native core values, Tribal community values, and personal experiences to refine our strategy. The environment was engaging, and I was able to strengthen my network and build relationships with other participants. Looking forward to implementing our new strategies to build Native Power in 2024 and beyond!”

Our national and state-based trainings aim to provide Native leaders, nonprofits, and organizations both in rural and urban communities the tools for effective grassroots organizing led by Indigenous values. Our trainings are grounded in traditional practices and elevate Indigenous leadership skills to build effective teams and powerful partnerships that can affect transformational change on a massive scale.
